11 Jan 2003, Slim's, San Francisco, CA, USA
Saw the show at Slim's in San Francisco last night.
First, the Eric McFadden Trio put up an EXCELLENT 45
minute set. Although I hadn't heard of the band, I was
blown away by the musicianship of all three guys, plus
the songs. In fact, I was wishing for their set to
last longer than the time it did.
After a 30 minute break, Steve and the guys walked in,
and gave us a blistering show. I don't have the
setlist (perhaps someone who got a copy can post it
here), but a lot of favorites were there, including
two of Jerry Goodman's songs (I believe from his
Mahavishu Orchestra days). The band were in great
spirits, enjoying themselves totally. No highlights
for me - the entire show was blistering! This time I
was in second row towards the center, and managed to
burn a few rolls of film, which I will develop and
send to the site [thanks mahesh - daniel]. Also got a drum stick from Rod -
thanks Rod!
After the show, got to meet everybody except Jerry.
While getting Steve'a autograph, I asked hi about the
latest Purple writing session with Michael Bradford,
and Steve replied that they were really good, and that
Bradford is a very talented guy. He also said that
Bradford is contributing to the writing, and has
contributed two songs so far. He confirmed that
Steve's instrumental that DP played in its tour will
probably make it. He said, "If they pick the songs
that I think should be in the album, it will be an
excellent album. If they pick their songs, then it
will be a more commercial album." I asked him who
"they" were, and he smiled and said "The guys with the
big votes; the singer and the producer." Rod, Dave and
T were there as well, and were friendly as ever.
The Dregs are having the time of their lives playing
together, and it shows - don't miss them if they're in
your area!
