16 Jan 2007, Slim's, San Francisco, CA, USA

Wow. I have seen Steve and crew 4 times now and they never disappoint. Even when Steve broke a string it didn’t faze him…I think he just pulled off the riff on another string. These guys, both the Steve Morse Band and the Dixie Dregs lend new meaning to the word TIGHT! After the show, I went to a practice studio and jammed with friends until 3:00AM, and it was really, really good. Thanks for the inspiration.

What an amazing billing! The Steve Morse Band AND the Dixie Dregs on the same ticket! Having previously read fan reviews of earlier shows in this tour, I'm offering perhaps a slightly different slant. Driving over seven hours to see the Slim's show in San Francisco on the 16th (including a near-blizzard in Medford, Oregon) has a way of fine-tuning one's entertainment perspective. But before I come across as the Simon Cowell of amateur Dixie Dregs show reviewers, let me just say that the show put a big smile on my face for the better part of three hours - in spite of some difficulties.

The sound and timing on the Steve Morse Band's portion of the show was incredible. Better yet, SMB's set included a couple Dregs numbers, including a beautiful rendition of Little Kids with Steve on guitar and Dave on bass. I now consider myself fortunate to have heard this tune performed live - a rarity I believe. Unfortunately, the timing during the Dregs' show was right on the money only about two thirds of the time, and the sound wasn't always what it could have been (where was the driving bass line on Cruise Control?). And unlike a previous review I read, the Slim's show did not find Steve to be flawless. His couple of minor glitches were followed by his infectious grin, the shaking of his head in acknowledgement, and super-rapid recovery which more than made up for the slight errors. Steve IS human - and wonderfully so! So is Rod, who to my untrained ear for drumming at least, actually did seem flawless for that show.

Last time I saw the Dregs at Slims' T Lavitz seemed totally pissed off about something or other while Jerry Goodman was absolutely on fire! This time around, T was in a bubbly, bouncy mood while Jerry seemed a tad lost here and there. His frantic, over-energetic solos during Odyssey replaced the sweet, melodic strains found on the What If album, and came across as more annoying than serene.

But again, there was that smile - plastered on my face for the entire duration. I was seeing my very favorite band for thirty years, the Dixie Dregs, and life seemed more than wonderful at that moment, no matter what. Keep up the celestial work, guys! (And please throw in a Pacific Northwest date next time.)

Hot Damn....as another reviewer has said, what a way to start the year.

Had the best seat in the house...right in front of Steve. The show was fantastic, as was expected. They really do make it look easy.

Just a few mishaps...Steve broke a string causing a re-arangement of the set list. Jeff Watson (Night Ranger) made a "surprise" visit, but was hampered by a finicky amp...however these difficulties were soon solved, and the show went on.

Saw old and new friends, and it was a great show...who could ask for anything more.
