STEVE MORSE - "SECTS, DREGS & ROCK 'N' ROLL" DVD A review by Rich Franz I purchased "Sects, Dregs, & Rock 'n' Roll" at the recent San Francisco show (even got it signed by Steve) and it is a must own for Steve Morse fans! Breaking it down into it's different sections we have... Dixie Dregs Live at Toads Place A show from the 2001-2002 tour, this showcases the Dregs at their best. Each band member plays exceptionally well. I was a little surprised and disappointed that the mix on Steve's guitar was so low. What I mean is that there are times when you can hardly hear him at all. Other than that it is a great show. Steve Morse (Electric Acoustic) Filmed in New York in 1992 this 50 minute set is just a joy from start to finish. Starting out alone playing acoustic guitar, then joined by Dave LaRue for a little electric workout, and finally T. Lavitz joins Steve and Dave to Finish up. I rate the audio and video quality excellent, you can hear every note. If this had been alone on the DVD it would still be worth the price...simply marvelous! "The Guitar Show" interview This is by far my favorite section of this DVD. For more than an hour Steve talks, jokes, tells stories, and explains some of the techniques he uses while he's also PLAYING some kick ass guitar. Imagine this...Steve comes over to your house, sits on your sofa, and does all things I've mentioned above (plus more)! This is exactly what this section of the DVD is all about. If this had been alone on the DVD it would still be well worth the price. (For some reason that sounds familiar). Cruise Missile (promo clip) An oddity that I had not seen before so it is welcome here. I would like to know how it was shown "illegally" on MTV. (as stated in the liner notes). Steve Morse guitar clinic & interview Short (about 6 minutes) somewhat like the guitar show interview interspersed with Steve giving a talk at a guitar clinic. Steve Morse guitar solo Taken from the "Total Abandon" Australian show this is one of my favorite Steve Morse / Deep Purple solos. Too bad that there isn't more of his DP work represented here. Roger Glover & Ian Gillan interview Short (5 or 6 min.) interview with Roger and Ian relating their opinions of Steve and how he joined Deep Purple. All 3 sections (Dregs, SMB, DP) are accompanied by a still photo gallery with 23 pictures total. Overall, I heartily recommend this DVD, it has some weaknesses but they are far overshadowed by it's strengths. Rich Franz |
