AT CONSTITUTION, THE CANNED KANSAS SOUND Sometimes the best remedy for a slow horse is a faster whip, and Kansas recently opted for a 1980s guitar Wunderkind to help keep the group moving. The addition of ex-Dregs' guitarist Steve Morse seems to be a calculated attempt by Kansas to regain some of the popularity it enjoyed in the late '70s. But last night at Constitution Hall, the group gave evidence that personnel changes may not be enough to pull that off. Playing through its Rolodex of hits such as "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Dust in the Wind," the group displayed an efficiency and precision that unfortunately segued into a yawning predictability: no new arrangements or extended versions, but rather a "just the facts, ma'am" approach to tunes that could have been enlivened by the fretwork of an underutilized Morse. With the exception of "We're Not Alone Anymore," a sizzler with frantic tempo changes and Phil Ehart's jackhammer double-bass drums, new songs such as "Secret Service" and "Power" sounded like leftover B sides from the group's early years. Kansas does seem to realize to some extent the drawing power of Morse. At one point in the show, he was left alone on stage to solo, and later he teamed up with guitarist Rich Williams for an acoustic duet on the Dregs' song "Up in the Air." But the addition of Morse isn't enough. Kansas remains very much archival - Washington Post, March 26, 1987
