Steve Morse finds Ocala instrumental to his creativity
TONY GREEN
There is no law saying that an instrumental wizard has to call L.A. or New York home. Some
people thrive on the concrete and smog, hustle and bustle. Steve Morse prefers hills and
grass. Peace and quiet.
Morse, sometimes of the seminal fusion-southern rock band the Dregs (whose forerunner was the
Dixie Dregs), has been living in Florida for more than 15 years, in Ocala for a year and a half. But
when you ask him about the music scene around his house, he admits to not knowing. Which is
kind of the point of being where he is.
""As far as music goes, I don't exist in the real world," said Morse. ""I'm kind of in my own little
cocoon. The whole idea (of being in Ocala) is to get away. I visit big cities as part of my job, I figure
maybe 150 days a year, so when I come home I like to be away. The only thing I'd change about
where I am is I would turn the thermostat down in the summer."
Despite his cloistering tendencies, the guitarist still manages to keep abreast of how his music is
being received in a world where it is still viewed as being on the fringes.
""Somehow, word of mouth-wise, we keep getting new people,'' he said. ""At the end of each show
there are fans wanting you to sign stuff, so I try to interview them, without being too obvious."
What he often finds is that there is still a group of people that is searching for something - okay,
he'll use the word - alternative.
""I have to find a new word, but that's basically my intent," said Morse. ""I think people segregate
their music too much - people are proud to listen to only one type of music. This is a "just country'
station or this is a "just rock' station.''
While studying music at the University of Miami (1971-75), he dipped into a ""little bit of everything."
He formed the then Dixie Dregs soon after graduation, recording five albums with the group and
four more with the renamed Dregs, as well as two greatest hits compilations. In 1986, two albums
into his solo career, Morse joined supergroup Kansas, recording two albums with them.
""It was a good experience," Morse says. ""I was a fan of their big, orchestral-sounding stuff. I was
glad they asked me to work with them, because it was fun and we got a lot of different musical
perspectives with six or seven of us on the stage at one time."
But instrumental stuff is where his heart is.
""We play tunes with melodies that anybody can get into on some level," Morse said. ""I like vocal
stuff; I'm not against it, but I'm not a vocalist. I'm an instrumentalist. It's not a political statement or
anything; it's just a matter of playing what you believe." POP MUSIC PREVIEW
