Earth Legacy Advisory Board Members Perform Benefit for Big Mt. Navajo
Earth Legacy Advisory Board member and lead guitarist extraordinaire, Steve Morse, got Earth
Legacy's Native American Benefit rock concert ball rolling with the impromptu donation of a
portion of his profit from two recent Northern California club gigs to the traditional Big
Mt. Navajo.
The January 26th show at a packed Slim's club in San Francisco was a particular highlight in
that Steve's fellow Earth Legacy Advisory Board members, Albert Lee, Chuck Leavell, John
Molo, John Trudell and Wavy Gravy, were a part of the show.
Peter Short, co-founder of Earth Legacy, Inc., put together the opening act which featured
Albert Lee on guitar, Chuck Leavell, who had the night off from the Rolling Stones tour
which was in SF the same time as Steve's gig, on keyboard, John Molo on the drums and Bobby
Vega on bass (Zero, Starship).
A recent addition to Earth Legacy's Advisory Board, John Molo plays with Bruce Hornsby and
replaced original Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzman in the Grateful Dead survivor band
"The Other Ones." Coincidentally, John Molo and Bruce Hornsby went to the University of Miami
at the same time Steve did.
Steve joined Albert and friends for a jam of Albert's signature tune "Country Boy" and Albert
joined Steve for "General Lee."
Native American (Sioux) poet John Trudell, who has worked with Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne and
Robbie Robertson, premiered a new poetry piece, "Me Up," backed by Steve and his bandmates
Dave LaRue (bass) and Van Romaine on drums. Steve's improvisational back up to John's poetry
was quite inspired. Wavy Gravy served as MC and thanked the crowd for supporting the Big Mt.
cause.
Earth Legacy Advisory Board members, Roberta and Danny Blackgoat were flown in by Earth
Legacy, Inc., to attend both of the shows. At the end of Steve's set on Wednesday, January
27 in Santa Cruz, both Roberta and Danny spoke to a very interested crowd who stayed to hear
about the situation on Big Mountain.
Earth Legacy Advisory Board members Albert Lee, Danny Blackgoat and Attorney Bruce Ellison,
were guests on a highly rated radio station KPIG in Santa Cruz on January 27. Albert
discussed his music and Danny and Bruce succinctly described the Big Mt. resisters stance.
Earlier in the day, Steve Morse was a guest on local rock station KRQR (who helped promote
the Santa Cruz show).
All in all, the benefit shows were a big success for the Indians and artists, with the Navajo
returning to their remote reservation with over two thousand dollars. Earth Legacy Advisory
Board Member, Carolyn "Mountain Girl" Garcia, was in attendance and commented that Steve
takes guitar playing to a whole new level. Also, Bryan Adams, who opened for The Stones
during their West Coast swing, came by to pay his respects to Steve. Bryan was given a box of
EARTH PAK by Peter Short . . .stay tuned for upcoming events.
