: I've been a huge fan of the Dixie Dregs and Steve Morse since 1977, and have attended more than 20 shows. But I've never heard Steve play with Deep Purple, even on an album. Honestly I was not a huge fan of the old Deep Purple, I found their music OK but not inspiring. But now that Steve is playing with them, naturally I'm more interested. So.... which Deep Purple album (featuring Steve Morse) would be the best to start with? As far as rock 'n' roll goes, my taste runs toward the Allman Brothers, Stray Cats/Brian Setzer (another fantastic guitarist by the way), Marshall Tucker Band, Dire Straits, Creedence Clearwater Revival. Thanks for any suggestions you can offer ---- John
You're in for a treat, John. Start out with their first album with Steve onboard, 'Purpendicular'. It's a bit of a classic, and has some amazing stuff on it. The follow-up called 'Abandon' rates a bit lower for me, but it's still worth getting though. As far as live albums go, try 'Total Abandon' and the 'Soundboard Series' (both available through the band's official online store @ www.sanity.com.au/promos/deeppurple). That way you'll get an understanding of how well they really function as a musical unit. Better still, go see them live, and you'll be a fan for life! :-)
